WELCOME TO PONTIANAK
Pontianak City (Chinese:: 坤甸, Khek:
Khuntîen) is the capital of West Borneo, Indonesia. This city is known as the
Equator City because of the equator line. In the north of Pontianak, precisely
Siantan, there is the Equator Monument built on the place where the equator
line passes. In addition, Pontianak City is traversed by the Kapuas River and
Landak River. Both rivers are neglected in the symbol of the city of Pontianak.
The city has an area of 107.82 square kilometers.
The name Pontianak comes from
the Malay language which is believed to have something to do with the story of
Sharif Abdurrahman who was often
harassed by the ghost of Kuntilanak when he walked along the Kapuas River.
According to his story, Sharif Abdurrahman was forced to fire a gun to drive
away the ghost as well as to indicate where the cannon fell, so that is where
the empire was founded. The bullets fell near the intersection of the Kapuas
River and Landak River, now known as Kampung Beting.
As an open city with other
cities as well as a center of government, private, and socio-cultural
activities, this city places more migrants than other districts in West Borneo, making it
more heterogeneous. Most of the tribes in Indonesia are represented as citizens
of the city. The tribes in the city of Pontianak such as Dayak tribe, Batak
tribe, tribe Padang, Javanese tribe, Bugis tribe, ethnic Malays, ethnic
Chinese, and others.
Event
/ cultural events that can attract foreign tourists and tourists archipelago
are held regularly in the city of Pontianak as follows:
The
Equatorial Earth Cultural Festival which is Held every 2 (two) years starting
in 1991, 1993, 1995 and year 1997. The festival is centered in Pontianak City
by inviting other areas in Borneo Island and areas in Sumatera Island held from
the 21st to 25th of March in the year of its operation. And at
this festival, it is coupled with the
natural events that occurr in the city of Pontianak, that is the culmination of the sun.
Ornamental
and traditional Rowing Competition
The first time competition was
held on March 22, 1997 by racing traditional canoe decorated with cultural
ornaments of each region.
